KUCHING: Two friends were each fined RM10,000 in default three months’ jail by the Magistrates’ Court here for conducting illegal online gambling activities last August.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali sentenced Florensi Guchien, 29, and Lenicker Libin, 21, after the latter pleaded guilty to the charge today (Nov 3).
Both were accused of operating a gambling machine at Jalan Stephen at about 11.20am on August 13.They were charged under Section 4B (a) of the Open Gambling House Act 1953 which carries a maximum jail term of five years or a fine of RM10,000 to RM100,000 if convicted.
According to the facts of the case, a police team raided an apartment at Jalan Stephen and found a man and a woman in a room operating a computer, believed to be a gambling machine.
The accused were arrested and a set of computer was also confiscated.
Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad asked the court to impose an appropriate sentence on the accused as a lesson.
