BINTULU: The standard operating procedure (SOP) for Covid-19 prevention in Bintulu can be further enhanced by issuing fines on vehicles found on the streets after 8pm.
Bintulu MP Datuk Sri Tiong King Sing said he had recommended to the Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) to review and tighten several SOP from tomorrow (25 April) onwards.
“This includes issuing fines to drivers who are still on the road after 8 pm,” he suggested.
Tiong stressed that enforcement officers should enforce the rule on anyone who continued to violate the SOP.
“Strict enforcement will be carried out on drivers of vehicles who drive after the stipulated time and will be instructed to turn back if the driver cannot give a reasonable excuse,” he said.
Tiong said based on the current traffic flow in Bintulu, there had been no significant decrease in traffic volume since the conditional movement control order (CMCO) was implemented.
He said enforcement personnel continued to face difficulties by SOP violators, including business premises that remained open after 8pm.
In another development, Tiong, who is president of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), urged employers in Bintulu to work 70 percent from home or face action.
He said many irresponsible employers had refused to cooperate and had threatened their employees with termination or pay cuts if they did not turn up at the workplace.
“I would like to remind these employers that as soon as their actions are reported by their employees, they will face legal action, including prosecution in court.
“To deal with the pandemic here (in Bintulu), everyone must adhere to the SOP strictly instead of repeatedly trying to dodge for their convenience.
“Everyone must strive to work from home and stay at home except for those who really have to be at the workplace,” he added.
