MULU: The State Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA) is planning to set up a Mountain and Cave Search and Rescue (MOCSAR) team in Niah National Park.
Its director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said there was a need for the department to make sure that park rangers in the state’s national parks to be trained.
In saying this, he pointed out that the park rangers will act as the first line of responder in an event of emergency.
“The Niah National Park is currently still in construction. Upon completion, they are expecting many domestic and international tourists to come.
“Based on our studies, we are planning to set up a MOCSAR team there so that immediate response can be given to tourists if there is any emergency,” he told New Sarawak Tribune today.
Khirudin stated that the department has formed a note of understanding (NoU) with Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) for training of park rangers.
Adding on, he said the department is also planning to set up MOCSAR team at notable tourist attractions like Wind Cave and Fairy Cave in Bau among others in time of need.
“The park rangers who are trained will be on standby. In the event of an emergency, they will be able to stablise and comfort the victim before the arrival of our BOMBA personnel,” he said.
The department currently has a MOCSAR team with 10 members at Mulu National Park which was formally established in 2020
