SIBU: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) is seeking the public’s cooperation to stop open burning activities during the current dry season, which can lead to wildfires.
According to Sibu Zone 4 Bomba chief Andy Alie said that from February until April 16, 38 cases of wildfires and open burning activities, involving 59.4 hectares of land, have been reported in Zone Sibu.
“These cases involve open burning activities that affect various areas, such as forests, weeds, garbage, gardens, fields, and more. In February, a total of 8 cases were recorded, followed by 11 cases in March, and 19 cases up to April 16th,” he said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
Andy also stressed that wildfire and open burning activities not only contribute to fire cases and smoke emissions but also have adverse effects on the environment.
“We will conduct regular patrols and monitor hotspot areas, especially with Hari Raya celebration just around the corner. Additionally, I hope that the Department of Environment (DOE) and other relevant agencies will assist in monitoring and curbing these activities that impoverish the environment and contribute to air pollution,” he said.
