KUCHING: Fire broke out at the Hii Yii Ngiik Building at Kwong Lee Bank road yesterday, causing damage to the upper floors of the structure.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) was alerted to the incident at 2.15 pm and promptly deployed teams from the Padungan and Tabuan Jaya fire stations.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the blaze had originated on the upper floor, which is used as a storage space for files and documents. The affected area measured approximately 20 x 40 sq feet.

The intensity of the fire resulted in severe damage to the first lot on the same floor, while the adjacent second and third lots experienced mostly smoke and water damage.

To combat the fire, the team used a 300-foot hose equipped with two nozzles, drawing water from a nearby hydrant. Efforts to ventilate the building were also made by opening the roof to clear the thick smoke.

The fire was successfully contained by 2.55 pm, but the site remained active as firefighters continued cooling and ventilation operations to ensure the area is safe. Further investigations into the cause of the fire were underway.
