ROBAN: A 26-door longhouse, Rh Spencer in Ulu Sebetan here, was completely engulfed in an afternoon blaze today (Aug 21).

Fortunately, no lives were lost in the 12.48pm incident. Twenty-six families were rendered homeless, however, the exact number of residents is not known yet.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department said that firefighters from Saratok and Sarikei stations were dispatched to the scene, about 21km away, after receiving an emergency call.

In addition, Roban auxiliary firefighters were also deployed to assist in the extinguishing works.

Upon arrival, they found the two-storey residential block beyond saving and the extinguishing deed was quickly performed using water sourced from a nearby river.

The flames were brought under control at 2pm, followed by overhaul works to ensure that there was no risk of re-ignition.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are yet to be ascertained.

It was reported that fire trucks could not reach the scene due to the narrow road, and there was poor cellular network and Internet coverage at the scene.
