KUCHING: A residence at Kampung Astana Lot, in Jalan Astana here, housing five members of a family, went up in smoke leaving the five homeless.

The house owner Dayang Intan, 50, who was in tears and feeling helpless, said her daughter, aged 28 and son aged 23, were in the house when a fire started on the first floor of the house. Both rushed out of the house in panic and were unable to save much from their residence.

Firemen rushed to the scene at 12.18pm after receiving a distress call about the fire. They managed to put the fire under control one hour later.

Dayang said the house is now completely destroyed and words cannot describe the sadness and pain of losing items of sentimental values in the house.

She will put up temporarily at her sister’s house and hoped that the Welfare Department will be able to offer help.

Total loss and cause of the fire is still unknown and is under investigation.
