SIBU: Three blocks of workers’ quarters in Tanjung Ensurai, Jalan Empawah were engulfed in flames and rendered seven families homeless on Thursday (Jan 6).

Fortunately, no lives were lost and no one was injured in the 6.10 pm fiery incident.

Sungai Merah fire chief Abdul Mutalif Ja’afar said his men along with firemen from Sibu Central station were promptly deployed to the scene, which is about 27km from Sungai Merah fire station.

Upon arriving, the team found that the fire destroyed three single-storey workers’ quarters, which had 10 doors per block.

A total of 18 tenants, consisting of 10 adults and eight children, managed to get out to safety when the fire happened.

It was said that the first block was uninhabited while the second and third blocks housed two and five families respectively.

The flames were put out at 7.18 pm and the whole operation ended at 9.10 pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred is yet to be ascertained.
