SARIKEI: An unoccupied residential barrack in Kampung Selalang here, was engulfed by flames yesterday (July 29).

The incident was noticed by the villagers around 4 pm after they spotted thick smoke coming from the wooden barrack.

Firefighters from Sarikei station were dispatched to the scene, about 33km away, after receiving a distress call.

Upon arrival, they found the eight-door barrack, owned by a private company, completely destroyed.

Extinguishing works were carried out using water sourced from their fire truck. The team brought the flames under control at 4.57 pm, preventing it from spreading to three nearby barracks.

Overhaul works were also conducted to ensure that there was no risk of reignition.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
