KUCHING: The fire incident on Ewe Hai Street underscores the importance for tenants and shopowners to remain vigilant and ensure they have all necessary fire prevention equipment mandated by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).
Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Hilmy Othman noted at the scene the importance of constant caution at the site and expressed hope for improved safety measures from everyone.
“We are committed to preserving this historical heritage. We will work with the fire department to ensure all firefighting equipment functions properly.
“The commission will also take steps to raise awareness among local residents about public safety.
“We will strive to raise awareness and take necessary steps to ensure the safety of all our residents,” he added when asked by reporters pertaining safety precautions on heritage buildings.
He expressed sadness and concern over the incident and assured that necessary measures would be taken to support the affected victims.
Also present was Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Datuk Wee Hong Seng who advised the people to steer clear of the area as Bomba has blocked the area to ensure they can do their job.
“So for us, I think since last week, there’s quite a bit of fire here and there. So we hope everybody will take precautions.
“I think especially on the old shophouses and all that, you can always get the authorities to come in to check the wiring and all that,” he said.
