KUCHING: In response to the fire on March 8, which destroyed five shoplots and a vehicle at Jalan Ewe Hai, near Carpenter Street, the Bandar Kuching Service Centre has allocated RM 59,800 for the 15 fire victims.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said that the beneficiaries include building owners, business and residential tenants, as well as those of the Everrise Hostel.
“Thankfully, no lives were lost, though the fire inflicted considerable damage on properties and business assets.
“After the fire, our team returned to the site to meet with all affected individuals and gather information from them. This would enable us to provide the best possible assistance based on the extent of their losses.
“We hope this support will aid them during this tough time, especially those who have suffered significant losses,” he said while handing out the assistance at Carpenter Street here yesterday (Mar 22).
Dr. Yii also urged for regular inspections of fire safety regulations by the relevant authorities, including ensuring that electrical wiring and building modifications meet safety standards, and that the Fire Department maintains well-functioning fire extinguishers throughout the city.
Also present were Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen and George Lam Li Kang, special assistant to Dr Yii.
