BINTULU: Longhouses must be equipped with essential safety features, including fire walls to prevent rapid fire spread, said the Minister of Food Industry, Commodities, and Regional Development, Datuk Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.

“The construction of an effective fire barrier wall is crucial to minimising the risk of fires, which are common in longhouses,” he said.

Rundi, who is also the Kemena assemblyman, advised longhouse residents to regularly inspect and replace their wiring systems.

Outdated or damaged wiring can be a significant fire hazard, he warned.

Furthermore, longhouse residents, particularly the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK), are encouraged to take proactive measures such as providing fire extinguishers and developing emergency plans.

“This not only protects property but also the lives of residents,” Dr Rundi said during the grant handover ceremony for the Rural Small Project (MRP) Phase 4 of the Kemena State Assembly at the Bintulu Division Agriculture Department today (Sept 22).

By implementing these safety measures, he hoped that longhouses would become safer and better equipped to meet the needs of their residents.
