KUCHING: Police have arrested a man who assaulted a disabled person in Samariang here.
Following a viral video that showed the suspect — a delivery staff — using a firecracker on the victim, police received a report on May 10.
Kuching OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah, in a press conference today, stated that the 24-year-old suspect had been detained.
“Within six hours (of receiving information about the video from netizens), the suspect was arrested.
“We also confiscated several items, including the firecracker, as evidence.
“The suspect started working with a delivery company over a month ago.
“The 42-year-old victim is in stable condition, however, we’re waiting for the hospital’s report on whether or not the victim suffered any injuries.”
ACP Ahsmon added that the suspect would be remanded for four days, and the case was being investigated under Section 324 for causing injury – if convicted, the suspect could be imprisoned for three years or fined.
“The case is also being investigated under Section 286 of the same code, and under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
“The person who recorded the incident would be called in to assist with the investigation and we will study the laws that can help with the investigation.
“The suspect has no priors. The motive for his action is being investigated but we believe that this is an act of bullying.”
