MUKAH: A firefighter was killed on his way home when the motorcycle he was riding collided with an SUV at Bestari roundabout here on Wednesday.

The victim, Jackery Tuksing, 48, from Kampung Tellian Ulu Mukah, was immediately taken to Mukah Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The State Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the victim had just completed a urine test at the Mukah police station at 10.24am.

Mukah district police chief DSP Jimmy Panyau said the driver of the SUV was believed to be driving from the Mukah market through Bestari roundabout, intending to return to his house in Kampung Medong Dalat.

“The victim was riding from the direction of Mukah Hospital — to return to his house in Kampung Tellian, when the SUV driver entered the roundabout and did not realise that the victim was also there.

“The driver of the SUV collided with the left side of the victim’s motorcycle, causing the victim to be thrown to the roadside.

“The impact of the collision caused the motorcycle to be dragged about 26 metres,” he said.

The driver of the SUV, who did not sustain any injuries, was detained at the Mukah police station for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death in an accident.
