MIRI: Firefighters on Wednesday (July 7) rescued an oriental pied hornbill trapped inside an old jar at the Sarawak Teachers Training Institute here.

It is understood that the bird had been trapped for nearly four weeks before emergency services came to the rescue.

According to the building’s janitor, known only as Saidi, the protected bird had been there for about three weeks, and he and several workmates had tried to set it free but to no avail.

“Every time we attempted to approach the jar, located outside one of the flat units of the building in the upper floor, the bird would try to attack us,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Wednesday.

Saidi and his workmates suspected that the bird had gone into the jar to lay her eggs but got trapped inside.

After all attempts failed, they finally called the Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) for help.
