SIBU: Continuous rainfall combined with the high tide has triggered flash floods in several areas here today.

Images and videos of rising waters and motorists caught in traffic congestion have been widely shared on social media.

The affected areas include Jalan Khoo Peng Loong, Jalan Lanang, Jalan Kwong Ming Sungai Bidut, Jalan Ling Kai Cheng, Sungai Merah Market, and Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg.

According to the Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Andy Alie, firefighters are actively monitoring flood-prone areas due to the flash floods.

“So far, we are only conducting surveillance in flood-prone areas. No temporary evacuation centres have been opened at this time,” he said when contacted by Sarawak Tribune today (Aug 23).

Andy also said that Bomba is prepared to assist the public with evacuation efforts should any roads become impassable due to the floods.
