MIRI: In the ongoing battle against the peat fire in Sungai Adong, firefighters have embarked on the fifth day of operations, employing the total flooding technique to extinguish the flames.

As per the latest update, the peat fire has consumed 110 acres of the surrounding area, with only 10 percent still emitting smoke.

Head of Bomba Zone 6 Fire Investigation Division Awangku Mohd Hazmin Awang Zainal explained that the total flooding method involves saturating the affected area with water to ensure complete extinguishment of the fire.

“The techniques have been crucial in successfully containing the peat fires and minimising the damage to the surrounding environment,’ he said.

The efforts of the firefighters and emergency response teams have been successful in containing the majority of the fire and preventing further spread.

Awangku said four excavators were deployed to the site to create firebreaks to prevent the spread of peat fires.

Throughout the intense battle, firefighters received assistance from various agencies including the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), the army, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Sarawak (DID), as well as volunteers from Naim and Woodman.
