Firemen conduct ops to remove hazardous chemical at school

MARUDI: A team of firemen from Marudi fire station was rushed to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Marudi to help in removing a hazardous chemical, mercury, which has spilled on its laboratory’s room floor today morning.

Marudi fire station in a report said they received an alert from the school’s teacher at around 11.10 am, following a broken thermometer in the laboratory room, causing the mercury to spill out.

Six firemen rushed to scene and arrived at 11.14 am.

The cleaning operations to remove the mercury residue by the firemen were completed at 11.46 am using sulphur powder and the dangerous chemical was placed in a disposable bag and later handed over to Marudi Hospital for disposal.
