Firm shy of Socso registration fined

KUCHING: A private firm here has been slapped with a RM3,000 fine by the Magistrate’s Court for failure to register its business with the Social Security Organisation (Socso).

The company, which deals with supply and sales of food items, accessories and products related to pet animals at Jalan Uni Central in Kota Samarahan, was charged under Section 4, Socso Act 1969 (Act 4) and Rule 10 (3), of the Employees’ Social Security (General) Regulations, 1971.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi imposed the sentence after Richard Nelson, a partner of Jelu Pets Shop, admitted guilty to the charge.

The firm was found to have failed to register its business with Sosco after more than 30 days of issuance of the notice.

Based on the facts of the case, an inspection was carried out on the employer on Aug 10, 2018 where it was discovered that it had employed one worker since Jan 31, 2018.

The prosecution was represented by a prosecution officer from Socso Masroeni Jaraie while the suspect was not represented.

On a separate issue, based on statistics from the state Socso Office, a total of 20 employers were brought to court for various offences between January and June 30 this year.

From the total, three were charged under Section 110(1) Socso Act 1969 (Act 4), for failure to produce documents as required by Sosco Summon Department.

Four other employers were charged under Section 14A, Socso Act 1969 (Act 4) and Rule 33 of the Employees’ Social Security (General) Regulations, 1971 for failure to settle interest on contributions.

Twelve other employers were charged under Section 4, Socso Act 1969 (Act 4) and Rule 10(3) of the Employees’ Social Security (General) Regulations, 1971 for failure to register their companies with Socso within the stipulated time.

One other employer was also charged under Section 5, Socso Act 1969 and Rules 12(1), of the Employees’ Social Security (General) Regulations, 1971 for failure to register their workers with Socso within the stipulated time.
