KUCHING: The first Sarawak Centexs-SDEC 5G test bed and Huawei Advanced Training Programme: Certified ICT Associate, Centre of Excellence Open Lab, Augmented Virtual Reality (AVR) Training Lab 2020 was launched yesterday.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg officiated at the launching ceremony held at the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs).

According to a statement, the 5G test bed is the government’s initiative through Centexs, Sarawak Media Authority (SMA) and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) to promote and coordinate test and research into the deployment of 5G.

“The 5G test bed is a testament of Sarawak’s progressive approach that is a part of its digital economy transformation,” said the statement.

During the ceremony, Centexs, SDEC, Huawei Technologies, Maxis, Sacofa and Valsa signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the establishment of the Centexs-SDEC 5G Smart City Test Bed, witnessed by Abang Johari.

“SDEC has initiated the Centre of Excellence Open Lab, an innovative platform that allows university researchers and start ups to utilise its technology partners’ digital tools and platforms.

“Centexs is also collaborating with EON Reality that established the augmented virtual reality (AVR) training lab at Centexs in imparting digital training needs for the industry, research and development, development of new IPs and commercialisation through SDEC,” it added.

Maxis will act as the telecommunication service partner while Sacofa will be providing the 5G Backhaul to radio network infrastructure in working closely with telecommunication authorities, as well as industry players to fully support 5G in Sarawak.

Also present at the event were Tourism, Art, and Culture cum Youth And Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali; Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan; Deputy State Secretary (Performance and Service Delivery Transformation) Datuk Dr Sabariah Putit; SMA general manager Dr Zaidi Razak, and Yayasan Sarawak director Azmi Bujang.
