SIBU: First aid knowledge and skills are needed more than ever due to the increasing number of accidents.
Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu Branch chairman, Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee said first aid has become an important tool in quickly responding to accidents to ensure that injuries can be promptly dealt with before coming under proper medical care.
“The three main aims of first aid commonly referred to as the “3Ps” are preserve life, prevent further injury and promote recovery,” he said at the World First Aid Day organised by MRCS Sibu here Sunday (Sept 10).
The theme for this year’s World First Aid Day celebration is “First aid in the Digital World”.
Chua said digital technology has played an important part in helping people of all ages acquire first aid knowledge and skills via e-learning at their own time and at own pace.
“But I still would like to encourage you to learn first aid through proper guidance by attending our Sibu Red Crescent “First Aider In Every Home” programme.
“We, Sibu Red Crescent as a social service agency and a charitable organisation, like to educate and disseminate our first aid knowledge to our local community through this programme.
“This programme has been constantly innovating and modifying to meet the specific societal needs and has been met with good response,” he said.
On World First Aid Day, he said it was introduced by IFRC (International Federation of Red Cross/ Red Crescent) in the year 2000, and is celebrated every year by 192 national Red Cross/ Red Crescent Societies globally.
According to him, the main aim is to raise public awareness of the importance of first aid knowledge during crises.
Deputy Minister of Public Health, Environment and Local Government Michael Tiang was represented by Penghulu Ting Tien Huat as the guest of honour at the event.
Also present was MRCS Sibu adviser Datuk Lau Ngie Hua.
