KUCHING: Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii is the first from Sarawak and Borneo to hold a role as the Pakatan Harapan (PH) National Youth chief.

He said that he is really humbled to be given the trust and responsibility to lead a national youth coalition.

“I do not take this leadership position lightly and hold the mandate to prove we Sarawakians can take a prominent leadership role on a national level,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted on his latest appointment as the PH Youth chief today.

Dr Yii, who is also the DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) chief, also said that being the first from Sarawak and Borneo to take such a role shows how PH does not just recognise the importance of the leaders from Borneo, but it is also an inclusive platform for all.

At the same time, he said he will take the responsibility to continue the struggle to serve to ensure that the needs and welfare of young people throughout the country are prioritised and that their wishes and aspirations are championed at all times.

“We are determined to continue to be a catalyst to bring a new breath of politics, politics that cares about the people regardless of race and religions, politics that bring policies and solutions,” he said.

“This trust is also a recognition for me as the first representative from Sarawak and Borneo to lead this idea at the national level,” he said.

Earlier on July 29, PH Youth Wing confirmed Dr Yii’s appointment in a statement. He replaced Pasir Pinji assemblyman Howard Lee.

His deputies are Mohd Hasbie Muda (Amanah Youth chief), Adam Adli Abdul Halim (PKR Youth chief), Nurthaqaffah Nordin (Amanah Youth Women wing chief), and Felix Joseph Saang (UPKO Youth chief).

Dr Yii, who is now 35 years old, first joined politics in 2016 at the age of 29. He was the special assistant to DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen before being an MP. He has also held the post as the DAPSY Stampin chief previously.
