KUCHING: Sarawak Energy is World Energy Council’s first Southeast Asian global patron, manifesting Sarawak’s renewable energy policies.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this recognition is the result of Sarawak’s efforts in introducing renewable energy to the world.
“This is a recognition of what has been implemented in Sarawak through the supply of renewable energy.
“People produce energy all over the world including Europe and they have recognised that the energy produced by Sarawak is the energy required in climate change,” he said when met by the media after attending the Rona Warni Aidilfitri X Travaganza programme at Juma’ani Pavilion here today.
Explaining further, Abang Johari revealed that the use of the latest technology in separating carbon from hydrogen has attracted the world’s attention to the point of recognition.
He added that Sarawak is now known internationally because of the use of this technology by Sarawak Energy which makes natural gas a clean energy source without carbon.
“Moreover, after the Hari Raya celebration, I will present a speech in Poland on climate protection which is also a recognition of Sarawak’s policy,” he said.
On the issue of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) being involved in the governance and development of the country’s hydrogen industry, Abang Johari explained that SEDC Energy, Sarawak Energy, and Petros play their respective roles in energy development.
“SEDC Energy is heavily involved in downstream matters including the petrochemical industry such as methanol and ammonia, while Sarawak Energy is responsible for the production of clean energy such as hydropower.
“However, all these agencies are under the coordination of the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability to ensure that energy development runs smoothly,” he added.
Earlier, Sarawak Energy had signed with the World Energy Council to become a global Patron, making it the first from Southeast Asia.
This was formalised during a virtual signing ceremony between Sarawak Energy Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili and World Energy Council Secretary General and chief executive officer Angela Wilkinson.
Through the agreement, Sarawak Energy will support the Council in its efforts to catalyse energy transitions around the world, while gaining access to the Council’s network of more than 3,000 member organisations in more than 90 countries, for global insights and best practices on energy policy, innovation and sustainability strategies.
