TANJUNG MANIS: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA)) here has detained a local fishing boat and four crew members for violating the terms of their license conditions on today (June 21).
MMEA Tanjung Manis director Commander Gilbert Tinggak Numpang said MMEA was monitoring the Muara Paloh waters around Muara Paloh, and spotted the suspicious boat fishing at about 6.25 am.
Further inspections found that the crew violated the conditions of their license by carrying out trawling activities less than seven nautical miles from the coast.
“The skipper and three local crew members, between the ages of 22 and 45, were on the boat.
He further explained that the local fishing boat involved was then detained on suspicion of committing an offence under the Fisheries Act 1985 before being taken to the Tanjung Manis Passenger Terminal Jetty for further action.
“Maritime Malaysia advises all maritime communities to comply with the laws before carrying out activities at sea and welcomes the sharing of information, complaints or incidents.
“Any activities that violate the law at sea and suspicious activities including incidents at sea, the public can contact MERS 999 or directly to the MMEA Tanjung Manis Operations Centre at 011-35728765 for immediate response,” Gilbert said.
