KUCHING: The fourth edition of the fishing competition held in conjunction with the 4th Semadang International Tagang Festival is expected to attract more than 150 local and foreign fishing enthusiasts.
According to the coordinator of the competition, Krisnam Louis Sebod, the competition will take place at the Semadang River in Kampung Semadang, Borneo Heights, about 40 kilometres from Kuching City, on September 1.
He said prizes would be awarded for three categories, namely, the fastest catch, the biggest catch, and most catches (based on total fish weight).
Krisnam said the fastest catch winner would receive RM100 cash and a trophy, while the winner of the heaviest catch category would also go home with a cash prize of RM100 and a trophy.
“The winner of the most catches category will return home with a cash prize of RM500 and a trophy, while the first runner-up will take home RM300 and a trophy and the second runner-up will receive a RM200 cash prize and a trophy.
“In addition, the organisers also offer seven consolation prizes worth RM50 each,” Krisnam said.
He added that the registration fee was set at RM20 for one fishing rod /two hooks; the payment must be in cash.
“The use of triple hooks is not allowed but the use of bait is free, while the fish caught must be alive, fresh and handed over to the competition judges for weighing,” he said.
“Participants who do not comply with the rules will be automatically excluded from the competition (disqualified) and the participation fee will not be refunded,” he said.
Krisnam said participants were allowed to bring back the fish they caught or released them into the river after the weighing process.
He said the registration of participants would start at 7am at Kampung Semadang’s multipurpose hall until 9am.
Meanwhile, the competition will start at 10am and end at 1pm.
“Earlier registration is encouraged,” he added.
