MIRI: Police arrested five elderly men in a raid last Saturday (Oct 5) for their involvement in cockfighting activities.

The operation, codenamed Ops DADU, took place at an open field here around 6 pm.

Miri district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspects, aged between 56 and 75, were arrested at the scene.

Police also seized two chickens and equipment believed to be used for the illegal activity.

An investigation has been opened under Section 73(1)(g) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999, which covers offences related to the involvement in cockfighting.

“Initial investigations revealed that all the suspects admitted to participating in cockfights at the location to gamble,” said ACP Alexson.

Police are issuing stern warning to the public to refrain from engaging in any form of illegal gambling.

Anyone with information on such activities to report to the nearest police station or contact the Miri police hotline at 085-433730.
