BINTULU: Five motorists, including a woman, were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in an operation codenamed ‘Op Mabuk’, recently.
The operation by the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) and Bintulu JSPT was carried out from 9.30 pm (on June 5) to 2 am (on June 6) at Jalan Bakery Ting, here.
“During the operation, police stopped five vehicles and detained the drivers, namely four locals and a foreigner, who were suspected to be driving with alcohol concentrations exceeding the permissible level.
“For the offence of driving under the influence of alcohol, the suspects will be investigated under Section 45A (1) APJ 1987, which carries a fine of up to RM30,000 or a jail term of up to two years, if convicted.
“In addition, the suspects can be disqualified from driving for not less than two years,” the police said in a statement.
Police also seized three motorcycles under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
Throughout the operation, a total of 152 individuals from 119 vehicles of various types were inspected and a total of 53 traffic summonses were issued for various traffic offences such as driving without licence or expired driving licence, fancy plate numbers, exhaust modifications and failure to use seat belts.
