MIRI: On Sunday, at least five raging bush fires were detected in the northern region including two in Marudi – opposite SMK Telang Usan and in Kampung Pemindahan Marudi.

Nearer to the city, the fires were at Kampung Lusut Bidayuh, Kampung Masjid in Kuala Baram, and RPR Sungai Rait.

Marudi firemen are seen working to put out the blaze under control opposite the SMK Telang Usan.

Firemen from Miri, Lopeng and Marudi are currently battling the bushfires.

According to Miri Zone 6 fire chief, Supt Law Poh Kiong, four acres of land have already burned near RPR Sungai Rait, believed to have been ignited by irresponsible people clearing land using fires for their orchards or farms.

“The fire near RPR Sungai Rait has caused smoke and ashes to shroud the area this afternoon,” he opined.

Nine firemen from Miri fire station immediately rushed to the bushfire at Sungai Rait.
