KUCHING: Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) is expected to see a five per cent increase in zakat (tithe) collection for the this year compared to the preceding year.
Its general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie said one of the factors contributing to the increase is collection through employers’ salary deduction.
“We can see that about 67 per cent of zakat collections are coming from salary deductions.
“God willing, we pray the more we collect, the more we are able to distribute to those who are in need,” he said.
Mohd Shibli said that last year TBS received a zakat collection worth RM115 million.
“Although the figure is not huge compared to the other states, for Sarawak it is still a good figure,” he said after receiving a business tithe from Bank Islam at the Saidina Umar Al-Khatab Hall, TBS Headquarters in Batu Kawah here today.
As for this year until Feb 2023, Mohd Shibli said TBS has received a collection of almost RM15 million and about RM13.2 million has been distributed to the needy.
Earlier, Bank Islam Group chief executive officer Mohd Muazzam Mohamed presented the business tithe for the year 2022, amounting to RM875,000 to TBS which was received by Mohd Shibli.
“We want to thank Bank Islam for contributing such a huge amount and from the collection, we will distribute it to the eight groups of beneficiaries as specified in the Al-Quran,” he added.
