KUCHING: Five types of face masks have been declared as price-controlled items under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) has set the ceiling price for N95 type at RM100 per box or a retail price of RM6 per unit.

For the tie-on type, the maximum wholesale price is set at RM30 per box while the ear loop/head loop design is priced at RM25 per box. The retail price for one unit of both designs of N95 type is 80 sen per unit.

The one-ply face mask (with ear loop) is set at a maximum wholesale price of RM5 per box, or a retail price of RM7 per box.

The World Health Organisation has outlined its standard recommendations for the public in an effort to reduce exposure to the infection.

The safety practices include hand and respiratory hygiene, and safe food practices as follows:

  • Frequently clean hands by using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water;
  • When coughing and sneezing cover mouth and nose with flexed elbow or tissue – throw tissue away immediately and wash hands;
  • Avoid close contact with anyone who has fever and cough;
  • If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing seek medical care early and share previous travel history with your health care provider;
  • When visiting live markets in areas currently experiencing cases of novel coronavirus, avoid direct unprotected contact with live animals and surfaces in contact with animals;
  • The consumption of raw or undercooked animal products should be avoided. The raw meat, milk or animal organs must be handled with care, avoid cross-contamination with uncooked foods.
