KUCHING: A rented apartment in Jalan Stapok used as an online gambling centre was raided by the police in an operation on Tuesday (Apr 6).

The 9pm raid carried out by the Padawan District Police Headquarters (IPD) Task Force saw the arrest of five suspects, namely two local men, two Indonesian men and an Indonesian woman.

Padawan deputy police chief DSP Lim Jaw Shyong said the arrestees were between 17 and 33 years old.

He said the syndicate was believed to have been operating in the apartment for several months.

“The syndicate looked for customers by phones in the guest room of the apartment to obscure the eyes of the police.

“The group operates 24 hours a day. All of them live in the apartment unit and work 12 hours a day.

“The total gross profit for this syndicate reaches up to RM4,000 a day while the monthly profit is up to RM120,000,” he explained in a statement today (Apr 7).

Lim said during the raid, the operations team also seized two laptops, three smartphones, two computer mice, a keyboard and a modem.

He added that statements had been taken from all suspects for further action and the case is being investigated under Section 4 (1) (g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
