KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is fielding five women candidates in the 15th general election (GE15).

Of the five, two are new faces. They are Rodiyah Sapiee who is contesting in Batang Sadong and Datuk Seri Doris Sophia Brodie who is fielded in Sri Aman.

The others are Kota Samarahan incumbent Datuk Rubiah Wang and Mukah incumbent Datuk Hanifah Taib whereas, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri is moving from Batang Sadong to Santubong.

GPS Women chief Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah when asked for her views said everyone started as a new face in their political career, including herself.

“In any election, the machinery and support from the party itself is very important.

“All these (new) candidates are standing under one coalition.

“Since this will mark the first time GPS is contesting in a parliamentary election, we must win and (win) gloriously,” she told reporters at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters, here yesterday.

In the previous general election), the then Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) fielded six women to contest in the Bandar Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Batang Sadong, Batang Lupar, Mukah and Selangau.

Four of them – Rubiah, Nancy, Hanifah and Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim (Batang Lupar) – managed to win their seats they contested.
