KUCHING: Several areas here experienced flash floods today (Oct 11) afternoon following heavy rain that lasted for about 20 minutes, causing traffic congestion and water accumulation in low-lying areas.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) carried out flood monitoring operations in high-risk zones, ensuring public safety and surveying affected regions.
According to a Bomba report, patrol teams were deployed from 2.10pm to 3.25pm to monitor flood-prone locations, including Jalan Pending, Jalan Kwong Lee Bank, Jalan Pearl, and the site of the upcoming Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s birthday celebration at Padang Merdeka.
The report indicated that the floodwaters had started to recede by the end of their patrol despite the continuous rain.
Firefighters confirmed that while the situation was under control in the monitored areas, residents were advised to remain vigilant due to unpredictable weather patterns.
Meanwhile, public reports and social media updates revealed that flash floods were worsening in other parts of the city.
Notably, water levels rose rapidly in the Petra Jaya area, with residents reporting significant flooding on Jalan Bunga Rampai, Jalan Bunga Raja, and Jalan Bunga Tanjung in Kampung Pinang Jawa.
A resident posted a video on social media showing how the floodwaters quickly turned streets into pools, making it challenging for motorists to navigate.
Further reports indicated that the underpass near Bulatan Kipali, along the Matang route towards the market, was submerged, adding to the chaos during the afternoon rush hour.
Motorists travelling in the vicinity of MRSM Samariang and Kampung Gersik also faced flash floods, particularly around the roundabout leading to the DUN area.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution, avoid flood-affected areas, and refrain from driving through heavily inundated roads to prevent accidents.
Residents in flood-prone zones are encouraged to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
