MIRI: Heavy rainfall since Thursday morning (July 23) until late evening caused several parts of the city, especially low-lying areas, to be inundated with floodwaters.

According to Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Chief Supt Law Poh Kiong, waterlogged streets have affected vehicular movement.

“Despite the situation, most of the affected roads are passable. For the moment, the situation is still under control,” he said.

A check carried out on Thursday (July 23) showed that in flood-prone areas within the city such as Jalan Raja, Jalan Miri-Pujut, Jalan Merpati, Jalan Bintang and Taman Tai Poo nearby Taman Awam were affected.

Miri fire station along the Miri-Pujut road was also affected.

“The drain next to the fire station was blocked after heavy rainstorms. Dirt and debris were all over the place. Our men are currently doing some cleaning on the area,” said Law.

Miri Civic Centre (Dewan Suarah Miri) was also hit by the heavy rain, causing one section of its ceiling to collapse.
