Flood mitigation efforts successfully conducted at SK Ulu Roban SARATOK: Swift action by the Civil Defence Force (APM) and the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) ensured the safety of 18 students, teachers and school staff from SK Ulu Roban following rising floodwaters at the school's hostel area. The operation, which took place from today (Dec 20), involved a coordinated team of six APM members from Saratok and Sarikei, alongside six Rela members. Equipped with a private vehicle, life jackets, water-level measuring tools and medical supplies, the team successfully relocated individuals and their belongings to the school’s dining hall, a safer location. “As of 10am, floodwaters at SK Ulu Roban reached a depth of one foot, impacting the primary access route between the hostel and classrooms. “Although the water level has shown signs of receding, continuous monitoring remains crucial. Overcast skies and the potential for further rain have raised concerns about fluctuating conditions. “The APM team deployed a rescue boat with assistance from Rela members to navigate the affected areas. Their efforts ensured the safe evacuation of students and staff, with personal belongings also transported to higher ground,” it said in the report. “The persistent rain and tidal phenomenon from the previous day caused low-lying areas to flood; it is advised the school authorities to stay vigilant in case of worsening conditions." No casualties or major damages were reported, and the evacuation process was completed smoothly without the need to activate a temporary evacuation centre (PPS).
