KAPIT: Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Bena in Sungai Sut, Kapit, is appealing for assistance from the public and relevant agencies following a recent flash flood.
Its principal Edwin Lang Nanyang said that the flood has submerged several buildings and the school dormitory up to roof level.
“We urgently need help not only to clean the school but also to replace essential items for our students, such as uniforms and books, which were destroyed by the flood,” he said when contacted by Sarawak Tribune today (August 24).
He is hopeful that those with the means to assist will come forward to support them through the recovery process.
On August 22, 47 individuals, including 33 dormitory students and 14 teachers and staff, were evacuated to higher ground as a result of the flash floods at the school.
Kapit fire station chief Timothy Barat stated that firefighters were dispatched to the scene, approximately 33 km away, after an emergency call at 3.42 am.
The victims were swiftly evacuated to a higher and safer place in the area using several longboats provided by the local folk nearby.
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
