MIRI: Heavy rain and a storm that began at 3am yesterday (Oct 4) triggered flooding in Kampung Long Laput, Sungai Baram here, leaving 960 people affected as water levels rose to 1.5 feet by 9pm.
The storm’s downpour submerged the village, where 171 houses were reported to have been impacted.
Residents were forced to move to higher levels within their homes as the floodwaters continued to rise.
In addition to residential areas, Sekolah Rendah Long Laput also experienced severe flooding, with water levels reaching approximately four feet in the school compound.
However, the colonnaded and elevated design of the school buildings spared the structures from direct damage.
Despite the severity of the flooding, the school administration confirmed that no evacuation to temporary shelters had been necessary as of yet, as students and teachers were safe.
