BETONG: Floods have been troubling many low-lying areas following continuous heavy rain especially over the weekend.
And with the Gawai Dayak celebration just round the corner, the headache couldn’t have come at a worst time for residents.
Tuai Rumah Charles Damit Augustine from Rumah Panjang Lawing Padeh said his longhouse, located about 20 kilometers from town, was among those affected by the flooding.
“This longhouse is 69 years old and it was very sad to see the surroundings affected.
“Not only were properties damaged, but it also affected livestock.
“Because it has never happened before, we were heartbroken,” he said here, yesterday, adding that the incident greatly affected their festive preparations.
But he said that Gawai Dayak on June 1 will still be celebrated as usual.
“Although in difficult circumstances, we will find time to celebrate with relatives and family members.
“Because such a celebration only comes once a year, it should be used to strengthen bonds and enhance family values among all residents.”
According to Charles the longhouse has been tidied up and cleared of the mud after the floodwaters subsided.
He expressed gratitude to all parties who provided donations, which greatly eased their burden.
Rumah Panjang Lawing Padeh has 14 doors with an estimated 112 residents.
According to Betong District Civil Defense Officer Captain Siti Huzaimah Ibrahim, the longhouse was hit by a flash flood on May 25.
It saw 24 residents from four families being moved to the Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS) at the Layar Rural Development Centre for three days.
