BINTULU: Some low-lying areas and areas near rivers in the Sebauh District were flooded yesterday following continuous rain over the past few days.
Sebauh District Officer Desmond Douglas Jerukan said the District Office had received warnings of the rising of the water levels in Tubau, Labang, Pandan, Sigu and Binyo as early as 26 February and also from the Drainage and Irrigation Department’s (DID) weather station.
Desmond, together with Murum State Assemblyman Keneddy Chuk Pai Ugon, the police and officers from the Sebauh District Education Office (PPD) went to the ground to review the situation.
“Schools which are flooded with two feet of water in the classrooms have to close. Schools outside the area with only their fields flooded are still operating as usual,” he said, when contacted through WhatsApp, yesterday morning.
According to him, three primary schools, namely SK Kuala Sigu, SK Bukit Bahai and SK Kuala Kebulu had been closed between 27 February and l March due to rising the water level.
SK Kuala Sigu and SK Kuala Kebulu were still closed yesterday while SK Bukit Balai reopened.
“So far, the situations in some flood-prone areas in Sebauh are still under control. However, local residents are urged to be alert on the possibility recurring floods,“he said.
