MARUDI: Water levels are finally beginning to recede after days of heavy rain that caused floods in town and surrounding areas.

The floods, which started last Saturday, had affected several communities, leaving roads submerged and houses flooded.

According to Maureen Sim, head of the Marudi Fire and Rescue Station, a flood monitoring conducted on Monday (Oct 14) showed that the Baram River’s water level had dropped by 15-20 cm.

Despite the gradual improvement, some areas remain affected.

“Jalan Nakhoda, which was previously flooded, is now recovering, with the road becoming increasingly busy with vehicles. However, many houses in Kampung Dato Zain Galau, Kampung Dagang, Kampung Baru, Kampung Narum, and Kampung Ridan are still partially submerged,” she said.

These areas, located near the riverbanks, are prone to water overflow from the river, drains, and ditches, making them particularly vulnerable during heavy rainfall.

Despite the gradual improvement, some areas remain affected.

Nonetheless, many residents have already begun cleaning up their homes.

However while the floodwaters are receding, the unpredictable weather poses a continued risk.

Sim stressed the importance of vigilance, urging residents to stay cautious and prioritise safety.
