KUCHING: There are no two ways about it, flouters of the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) will be fined, asserts Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos.

He said this is particularly when dealing with deliberate and repeated offenders of the SOPs laid out to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Those who go against the SOPs know the rules — which everyone must observe and adhere to for the good of the society.

“They flout and thus, they will be fined. Anti-epidemic measures need everyone obeying the common rule,” he said on Sunday (June 20).

Minos said compounding the flouters is necessary as it is part and parcel of the measures to tackle Covid-19.

Meanwhile, Kuching City South Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said issuing compounds to violators was a tool to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“Strict enforcement of SOPs will not be effective without penalising the offenders,” he said.

He pointed out that discipline and the ongoing vaccination programme to achieve herd immunity play significant roles.

“We have the guidelines set by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and a hotline provided to assist the public. This pandemic did not just happen yesterday but it has happened over a year already.

“Hence, to understand and get information about the SOPs is not an issue but some people just want to be selective on which SOP suits them.

“All the public need to do is to stay safe at home and stay vigilant when going out,” he added.

Wee also reminded the public to only go out of their houses if it was really necessary.
