KUCHING: Under the latest standard operating procedures (SOPs) outlined under Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP), cinemas in Sarawak can resume operations.
However, they exclude those in Kuching, Lundu, Bau, Serian, Tebedu, Samarahan, Asajaya and Simunjan where the daily Covid-19 cases are still high.
The recent announcement by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), received mixed reactions from the public based on a poll conducted by New Sarawak Tribune yesterday (Aug 15).
While most of them looked forward to spending their time relaxing and watching a movie at a cinema, some feel it is not the time now to visit one because of the high number of daily Covid-19 cases in the state.

I believe that cinemas are strict with their standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure that everyone is safe. As a moviegoer, I think it’s great that I can finally watch a movie in the cinema again after a long while. The reopening will also provide a source of income for those who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

Watching a movie in the cinema feels different. Stress builds up after staying home for a long period of time and personally, watching movies outside with family members and friends is a great way to relieve stress

I will watch a movie in the cinema because I miss the time when the pandemic wasn’t a concern. However, it is compulsory for us to follow the SOPs in and out of the cinema for our own protection.

Even though movies can now be accessed online, I miss watching movies in the cinema while munching on popcorn. It feels entirely different. With strict SOPs, I will feel safe watching movies in the cinemas.

I am against the idea of going to the cinema since it is an enclosed space that brings risk to everyone regardless of the SOPs. While the need to help the economy is there, I wouldn’t risk my safety and health even if I am in a Phase 3 district.

Although I have my concerns, I am for the reopening of cinemas. The cinema industry had been greatly affected during this pandemic. I believe this can even be viewed as a sign towards some sort of normality again.
