MIRI: A foreign student from a private tertiary institution in Senadin has been detained by the police to help them investigate an alleged rape claim.

The 24-year-old male student from Nigeria was detained on Sunday following a police report lodged by a 20-year-old student from the same tertiary institution.

Miri Police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah confirmed receiving the report.

The suspect was scheduled to be produced at Miri Court Complex yesterday.

The incident allegedly occurred inside an unoccupied building in the wee hours of Saturday.

Prior to that, the victim and two other female friends had gone to an entertainment outlet at Jalan North Yu Seng here. They arrived in a Grab car.

Inside the entertainment outlet, the victim met and befriended the suspect.

Subsequently, the suspect asked the girl to accompany him to a nearby shop to buy a pack of cigarettes. Both of them drove off in a car.

While in the car, the girl claimed the suspect fondled her breasts but she was too inebriated to put up a fight.
