BINTULU: A foreign man was arrested on suspicion of being involved in drug distribution and abuse around Bintulu.

Bintulu district police chief Superintendent Nixon Joshua Ali said the 33-year-old suspect was detained by a team of officers from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Bintulu district police headquarters (IPD) at a hut beside Sebauh River on Wednesday (July 3).

He said the suspect was detained and investigated under Section 39A(1) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (ADB) 1952. The foreign suspect was also investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 for not possessing valid travel documents.

He added that preliminary police screening tests found the suspect positive for methamphetamine. Also seized were 8.2 grams of drugs suspected to be syabu (methamphetamine).

“Initial investigations also found that the drugs were believed to be for distribution around the Sebauh area and could be used by 15 to 20 addicts.

“Under Section 39A(1) of the ADB 1952, the suspect can be imprisoned for not more than five years and given not less than three strokes of the cane.
