PADAWAN: Forest fire has been burning for over a week at Derod Rimo (Mount Rimo) located near Kampung Benuk Sumur, Jalan Borneo Heights, some 35 km from Kuching.
Local villagers said they noticed the fire burning on top of the mountain for more than a week, despite rain in the area almost every evening.
A villager said the Siburan Fire and Rescue Station has been notified of the fire and sent their team to the scene last Monday.
He said the fire fighters team has been monitoring the situation daily including using drone.
“They also informed us that an application to use a helicopter to put out the fire has been forwarded to the headquarters and is awaiting approval,” he added.
As of this afternoon, smoke could still be seen on top of the mountain.
However, heavy downpour starting at about 2.30 pm and lasting for a few hours was expected to put out the forest fire.
