MIRI: Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau has called for the establishment of community associations for the Kayan community to promote unity and development.
He urged villages to form associations similar to the Sarawak Kayan Association (PKS).
Dennis highlighted the need to expand such associations across Sarawak, including creating branches in areas like Sibu and Long Lama.
“We aim to establish branches this year or by early next year so that every city and town has a community representation,” Dennis said when speaking at the opening of the Kayan Carnival, here yesterday (Nov 15).
“Associations are vital for unity and provide platforms for both social and economic support,” he added
Drawing from examples of the Chinese community, Dennis noted the significance of associations in fostering unity and development.
He pointed out how the Chinese traditionally establish prayer houses, schools, and associations whenever they settle in new areas.
“Associations bring people together, not just for organising programs but also for economic benefits. For instance, among the Kayan community, skilled members like air-conditioning or car repair experts can use these platforms to share their expertise,” Dennis explained.
The event also witnessed Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang pledging an allocation of RM30,000, while Dennis announced RM20,000 in funding to support the initiatives of the Kayan community.
The Kayan Carnival served as a platform to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Kayan people, while underscoring the importance of collaboration and empowerment through community associations.
