BETONG: A committee needs to be established at the Kampung Melayu Spaoh level to ensure the participation of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community leaders, women, and youth in project implementation under the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA).
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that the committee could play a role in considering the developments that should be implemented in Spaoh to further improve upon what has been achieved thus far.
He said the establishment of the BDDA by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was to receive feedback from the grassroots level to inform the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)-led government on what should be developed in their respective areas.
In this regard, he called on all grassroots communities to voice their opinions so that Kampung Melayu Spaoh will not be left behind.
“If people succeed in the education aspect, we also want to succeed in education, and the same goes for business and other aspects.
“So that when Sarawak becomes a developed state by 2030, we, in Spaoh, can also move forward,” he said at the recent Program Jelajah Ramadan organised by Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Islam Spaoh (LAKIS) at Masjid Darul Syifa here.
At the event, Uggah, who is also the Bukit Saban assemblyman, handed over donations in the form of daily necessities to single mothers and reverts and broke fast with the villagers.
Earlier, Uggah, who is also the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, visited the proposed Jalan Penom/Ulu Bayor/Danau, Betong Phase 1 project.
He was accompanied by Betong Member of Parliament Dr Richard Rapu to inspect the physical progress at the construction site and to learn about the issues and proposed solutions.
He was briefed by Betong Division Public Works Department (PWD) engineer Oliver Ngabong as well as given feedback from the contractor on progress and issues at the site.
Uggah stressed that the contractor should have a high level of commitment to the implementation of work at the construction site.
The construction of the 7.43-kilometre road under the supervision of Betong Division PWD has now reached 62 per cent completion and will serve as the connection route between the Ulu Paku and Ulu Bayor areas.
In another development, Uggah, who is also the chairman of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), said that the committee would hold a meeting soon given the current hot and dry weather to discuss and prevent localised haze occurrences.
