KUCHING: A former 24-hour convenience store employee was sentenced to six months in prison for stealing prepaid cards and money.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar sentenced Mohd Amirul Kapli, 23, after the charge was read out in front of him.

The Magistrates’ Court ordered the accused to serve his jail term from the date of his arrest, Nov 13, 2021.

The accused was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code for stealing a RM10 prepaid card, RM200 Touch and Go prepaid card and a sum of RM210 from the 24-hour convenience store in Jalan Urat Mata, around 7am, last Nov 11.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant, who is the store manager, found that the savings of RM380 and the ’till settlement’ money of RM210 had gone missing.

The estimated loss incurred is approximately RM590.

The complainant then checked the CCTV footage and found that a former employee (the accused) had entered using a duplicate key that was still in his possession after being laid off.

The complainant then lodged a police report which in turn led to the arrest two days after the incident.

As a result of further investigation, based on the receipt, the accused had stolen a Digi prepaid card, a Touch and Go prepaid card and the ’till settlement’ money, all amounting to RM420.
