LUNDU: Four crocodiles were culled in Batang Kayan at Kampung Selampit, Lundu on Saturday.

The reptiles were culled by individuals who have licences issued by the Sarawak Forestry Department, following complaints from locals over the increase of the reptile population in Batang Kayan.

A community leader, Longer Mised, 57, said the presence of the reptiles had affected the locals, especially the fishermen, in carrying out their daily routine as locals had on numerous occasions encountered them.

He added that there seemed to be an increase of crocodiles in the river as days went by, which posed a threat to locals.

“This has very much affected our source of income, whereby our nets and fishing traps were destroyed by the crocodiles,” he said when contacted today.

Two of the crocodiles that were captured and brought to shore.

He pointed out that one of the villagers was recently killed in a crocodile attack “prompting us to engage with the cullers and this led to four crocodiles measuring between 12 to 18 feet being caught.”
