TANJUNG MANIS: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has spent 36 hours trying to extinguish forest and bush fires involving over 300 acres in Kampung Sedi here, since four days ago.
Tanjung Manis Bomba station acting chief Majedi Tinggal said his team was dispatched to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 4.52pm on Aug 7. The operation is being carried out in shifts.
“We are facing a shortage of water and the water source is too far. The fire spreads fast due to the changing wind. The size of the area is also large.
“So far, 18 firefighters are being assisted by the villagers and Pulau Bruit’s auxiliary firefighters,” he added when contacted yesterday.
Majedi disclosed that the location of the fire was near to the road but spread quickly into the thick forest.
“The operation continues today. We have also received assistance from Sungai Merah Fire Station,” he said, adding that his team had some difficulties in entering the burnt area while having to be careful with their surroundings.
He also advised the general public not to dispose of any refuse in the area as well as to avoid carrying outopen
burning.
